^Looking west along Interstate 894 where it is about to curve toward the right (north), October 2022.
Interstate 894 is a southwestern beltway around the heart of Milwaukee. Interstate 894 starts at the Mitchell Interchange south of downtown Milwaukee, and it goes westward from there. The Mitchell Interchange has Interstate 94 going north-south, and Interstate 41 comes from the south to turn westerly along a concurrency with Interstate 894. In fact, Interstate 41 follows the whole of Interstate 894, so some would say that the Interstate 894 is entirely redundant. Also, at the Mitchell Interchange, Interstate 43 comes from the north to turn westerly. That means the first half of Interstate 894 is concurrent with both Interstate 41 and Interstate 43. (To make things even more complicated, Interstate 41 is entirely implicitly concurrent with US Route 41.) At an interchange in Greenfield, five miles west of Interstate 894's inception, Interstate 894 curves toward the north as Interstate 43 diverts toward the southwest. This leads to the second half of Interstate 894, running northward. The Interstate 894 designation ends at the Zoo Interchange, where Interstate 94 runs east-west. The freeway continues northward, however, as Interstate 41 and US Route 45. In total, Interstate 894 is almost ten miles in length.
My photo of a route marker for Interstate 894 in Wisconsin shows a set of guide markers along Wisconsin Highway 24, which crosses the freeway at Exit 5A. These guide markers are actually for eastbound traffic on Layton Avenue, a surface street just south of Interstate 894. It shows people how to access a ramp to the northeastward lanes of Wisconsin Highway 24 and, by extension, the ramp from Highway 24 to Interstate 894 westbound. Note the additional signage indicating that Interstate 894 also carries Interstates 41 and 43. This photo was taken in July 2018 while driving around southeastern Wisconsin.
