^Looking east from Exit 41 (Wisconsin Highway 131) in Tomah, May 2022.
In Wisconsin, Interstate 90 runs from La Crosse to Beloit, by way of Tomah, Madison, and Janesville. It runs eastward, southeastward, and then southward. The entrance into Wisconsin is a crossing of the Mississippi River, out of Minnesota and into La Crosse. Interstate 90 runs eastward, with Wisconsin Highway 16 following the same corridor, for about forty miles to Tomah. At Tomah, Interstate 90 joins the southeastward freeway called Interstate 94. Interstates 90 and 94 meander southeastward through the Wisconsin Dells area. The dual-numbered freeway turns easterly from Wisconsin Dells to Portage, where Interstate 39 joins from the south. Interstates 39, 90, and 94, now all follow the same freeway that heads southward to the Madison area. On the east side of Madison, Interstate 94 splits off to head east to Milwaukee, leaving Interstate 90 and Interstate 39 to continue south. The two designations remain twinned until the Illinois border, as the freeway continues south past Janesville to Beloit. Beloit is where Interstate 90 intersects Interstate 43. A mile or so beyond the Interstate 43 interchange, Interstate 90 crosses into Illinois, pointed toward the south.
My photo of a route marker for Interstate 90 in Wisconsin shows a pair of junction markers facing east along Wisconsin Highway 81. Wisconsin Highway 81 crosses Interstates 90 and 39 at the same place where Interstate 43 begins toward the northeast; that flyover ramp in the foreground is a ramp leading to the northeastward beginning of Interstate 43. Those looking west toward the interchange at Highway 81 and Interstate 90 are introduced to the situation by these junction markers. This photo was taken in Beloit on my way north to northwestern portions of Wisconsin and eastern portions of Minnesota in July 2025. Back to the Wisconsin main page. Back to the home page.
