^Interstate 94 just after crossing the Illinois state line toward the north, July 2022.
In Wisconsin, Interstate 94 heads easterly and southerly to join the Twin Cities to Milwaukee and Chicago. Interstate 94 wears a lot of highly important hats in Wisconsin, metaphorically speaking, of course. The highway enters Wisconsin just east of the Twin Cities, crossing the state line near Hudson, Wisconsin. The first target for the eastward freeway is Eau Claire, where Interstate 94 begins to bend toward the southeast. At Tomah, Interstate 90 comes from the west to join Interstate 94 toward the southeast. Interstates 90 and 94 serve the Wisconsin Dells area together, and that is where they bend eastward. Near Portage, Interstate 90 and Interstate 94 both join a third Interstate, with the number 39, toward the south. This triple-concurrency heads southward to the eastern reaches of the Madison area. On the east side of Madison, Interstate 94 ditches Interstates 39 and 90 so it can turn straight toward the east, bound for Milwaukee. In downtown Milwaukee, within a mile of Lake Michigan's shoreline, Interstate 94 turns straight southward on a freeway that's shared with Interstate 43. That turn to the south is the Marquette Interchange, which is also home to the western beginning of Interstate 794. Interstates 43 and 94 head southward out of downtown Milwaukee together, and on the south side of the city, Interstate 94 splits away to continue south, while Interstate 43 turns independently toward the west. Interstate 94 continues southward and passes by the entrance to the Mitchell International Airport (that entrance is Wisconsin Highway 119). US Route 41 is following Interstate 94 southward here, as the two routes joined together where Interstate 43 left. Interstate 94 and US Route 41 continue southward on a wide, eight-lane freeway to the Illinois state line, passing the Racine and Kenosha areas along the way. Interstate 94 enters the Illinois state line near Zion, Illinois, bound for Chicago. The Lake Michigan shoreline lies less than eight miles east of this foray into Illinois.

My photo of a route marker for Interstate 94 in Wisconsin comes from this junction marker on Wisconsin Highway 78 northbound. This signage is found at an interchange involving Interstates 39, 90, and 94, near Portage. As Wisconsin Highway 78 ends, the pavement becomes the northward continuation of Interstate 39, which splits from Interstates 90 and 94 at this junction. The junction marker informs these northbound travelers on Wisconsin Highway 78 that their options are Interstate 39, or one of the directions along Interstate 90/94. This photo was taken on the way to western portions of Wisconsin in July 2025. Back to the Wisconsin main page. Back to the home page.
