^Wisconsin 171 starts off toward the east from its origin at Wisconsin 35, October 2016.
Wisconsin Highway 171 is an east-west rural highway winding through the hills of southwestern Wisconsin. It begins west of Richland Center along US Route 14, at a tiny town called Boaz. While US Route 14 curves toward the northwest, Highway 171 appears for those who want a more westward direction to their continued traveling. Continuing onward, Wisconsin Highway 171 encounters US Route 61 south of Soldier's Grove. It encounters Wisconsin Highway 131 in Gays Mills, at an awkward 4-way intersection. At another awkward 4-way intersection, Highway 171 then crosses Highway 27 in Mount Sterling. After that, Wisconsin Highway 171 continues wiggling its way through the hills of the Driftless Region, moving westward toward the Mississippi River. Wisconsin Highway 171 ends immediately adjacent to the Mississippi River, at Wisconsin Highway 35 near Ferryville.
My photo of a route marker for Wisconsin Highway 171 comes from its junction with Wisconsin Highway 131 in Gays Mills. As Highway 171 enters Gays Mills from the east, it winds toward the north. Those on that northward piece see this sign. Curving back toward the west is required to reach the four-way intersection with Wisconsin Highway 131, but an access road exiting straight ahead will plant people at a separate stop sign with more direct access to the northbound lane of Wisconsin Highway 131. This photo was taken during my day trip around southwestern Wisconsin in October 2016. Back to the Wisconsin main page. Back to the home page.
