Wisconsin Highway 22 runs from south-central Wisconsin to northeastern Wisconsin. As US Route 51 moves northward out of the Madison area, it suddenly turns to the west near Arlington. However, the road continues northward, and this continuation of the northward road is the first stretch of Wisconsin 22. The route, overall, exists in three chapters. The first chapter runs northward in the middle of Wisconsin, then it wiggles north and east indecisively. The third chapter is when Wisconsin Highway 22 finally decides to just go east. During the first chapter, the northward one, Wisconsin 22 serves a bunch of small towns, like Pardeeville, Montello, and Wautoma. At Waupaca, Wisconsin 22 enters the second chapter, wherein the highway zigzags between northward portions and eastward portions. It goes east along Highway 54, then north along Highway 110. Then it goes east to Bear Creek, where it joins US Route 45 north to Clintonville. Highway 22 goes northeast from Clintonville to Shawano, where it enters its third and final chapter. Highway 22 crosses to the north side of Wisconsin Highway 29, and it turns eastward to Oconto. The north-south highway through Oconto, US Route 41, has a freeway bypass around the west side of town. Wisconsin Highway 22 proceeds slightly beyond that bypass to end at the business alignment of US Route 41.
My photo of a route marker for Wisconsin Highway 22 is a reassurance marker at that route's split from US Route 45 in Clintonville. US Route 45 just diverted toward the northwest, leaving Highway 22 the only remaining designation on this street. This photo was taken in February 2022 during my trip around eastern Wisconsin.
