Wisconsin Highway 40 runs north-south along an approximate boundary between the northwestern and north-central portions of Wisconsin. As it winds its way southward, it gradually builds up a bit of a southwesterly tilt. At the small town of Radisson, Highway 40 begins at Wisconsin Highway 70 and starts off toward the south. It meets the eastern end of Highway 48 in Exeland. Later, Wisconsin Highway 40 encounters US Route 8 in Bruce, and it crosses US Route 53 in Bloomer. Beyond Bloomer, Highway 40 cuts westerly to the eastern end of Highway 170. then it finishes its journey southward. The southern end of Highway 40 is at Highway 29 in Elk Mound, at an interchange that is just barely east of Interstate 94.
My photo of a route marker for Wisconsin Highway 40 comes from the junction of Wisconsin Highway 29 and Interstate 94 in Elk Mound. Those travelers exiting the eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 will see this set of guide markers guiding them down Highway 29 eastbound. Highway 40 lies just east of here, and this sign tells people that much. This photo was taken in August 2015 on the way home from the Twin Cities (and the Minnesota State Fair).
