^Looking south along Wisconsin 42 in Two Rivers, February 2022.
Wisconsin Highway 42 is a highway in easternmost Wisconsin, running northward from Sheboygan to the tip of the Door Peninsula. It is one of the routes traversing Door County, along with Wisconsin Highway 57. The southern end of Sheboygan is also the eastern end of Highway 23 and the northeastern end of Highway 28. The first piece of Highway 42 heads northwest out of Sheboygan to Howards Grove, where it ricochets off of Highway 32 to turn northward. Next, Wisconsin Highway 42 goes northward, eventually bending back toward the lake shore, so it can serve the lakeshore community of Manitowoc. Highway 42 hugs the shore of Lake Michigan as it serves more lake shore communities, such as Two Rivers, Kewaunee, and Algoma. As the shoreline traces a line that bends northeastward to form the western shore of the Door Peninsula, Highway 42 heads straight north out of Algoma to join Highway 57 into the Sturgeon Bay area. Highways 42 and 57 follow the same road bypassing Sturgeon Bay to the south and east. Beyond this county seat of Door County, Highway 42 opts for serving the Green Bay side of the peninsula, whereas Highway 57 hugs the eastern shore of the peninsula. Highway 42 serves Egg Harbor and Ephraim before reconvening with Highway 57 in Sister Bay. Here, Highway 57 ends, but Highway 42 is allowed to continue onward to Northport. Northport is not much of a town, but it is the site of the ferry terminal used by those seeking to reach Washington Island. This ferry terminal marks the northern end of Wisconsin Highway 42.
My photo of a route marker for Wisconsin Highway 42 is found at an intersection with County Road S in Sturgeon Bay. This photo faces north at southbound traffic; Highways 42 and 57 are bypassing the center of Sturgeon Bay to the south. This photo was taken in September 2019 during a trip to Door County.
