^Westbound exit sign on Wisconsin 441 where it meets County P, not far from the state highways southwestern endpoint, September 2025.
Wisconsin Highway 441 is a freeway partially encircling Appleton, passing to the south and east of the city. On a map, you can envision a full freeway beltway around Appleton, if you consider Interstate 41 to be the northern and western sides of that beltway. Wisconsin Highway 441 begins at a north-south piece Interstate 41 southwest of Appleton, and it starts off moving eastward from there. The interchange home to the highway's start point is a four-way interchange, that also serves US Route 10, which runs east-west across the interchange. That means Wisconsin Highway 441 begins with a concurrency along US Route 10. This explains why the first several exits from Highway 441 use US Route 10's exit numbers, like 289, 290, and 291. Exit 291 sends US Route 10 to the south so it can jump off of Highway 441 to another eastward roadway. A few more miles to the east, Highway 441 curves toward the north to serve as the eastern side of the beltway around Appleton. The freeway meets three more interchanges with surface roads, but not with Wisconsin Highway 96 which passes right under the freeway. Once it has completed its northward course around the east side of Appleton, Wisconsin Highway 441 ends at a trumpet interchange with Interstate 41's eastward piece that is bound for Green Bay.
My photo of a route marker for Wisconsin Highway 441 comes from an interchange with the street bringing US Route 10 into this vicinity from the south. This interchange is on the south side of Appleton. The travelers seeing this sign are driving on the street that allows US Route 10 to jog northward to Highway 441 from Highway 114. The sign alerts those travelers to the upcoming interchange with Wisconsin Highway 441, which is a diverging diamond, now. To follow US Route 10, travelers will need to bear left onto an onramp to Highway 441 westbound, because a concurrency between the two routes begins at this point. This photo was taken in September 2025, as I was driving US Route 10 across Wisconsin. Back to the Wisconsin main page. Back to the home page.
