^Looking north along Wisconsin 47 from its junction with Wisconsin 156 south of Bonduel, February 2022.
Wisconsin Highway 47 is a highway in upper regions of the state of Wisconsin, beginning in the Appleton area and stemming northwest from that point of origin. The northern end of Highway 47 is in Manitowish at US Highway 51, at a point 35 miles south of Lake Superior. Like many state highways in Wisconsin, Highway 47 alternates back and forth between a latitudinal course and a longitudinal course. Its first section heads straight north for a long distance, though, beginning at Wisconsin Highway 114 in Menasha and heading northward through the city center of Appleton. Wisconsin 47 has much bigger goals, though, and it presses on northward beyond Interstate 41 to Wisconsin Highway 29. At Bonduel, Highway 47 joins Highway 29 westward until Shawano. Highway 55 carries Highway 47 north away from Wisconsin Highway 29 into Shawano. Then, at Keshena, Highway 47 splits from Highway 55 to cut westward toward Antigo. South of Antigo, Highway 47 joins US Route 45 north through Antigo into Forest County. Highway 47 turns westerly along US Route 8 to Rhinelander, where it finally gets the idea to do something independent for a change. Highway 47 splits from US Route 8 in Rhinelander to move northwesterly through Woodruff, where it crosses US Route 51. Between Woodruff and its northern end in Manitowish, Highway 47 loops westerly through Lac du Flambeau, serving as a bit of an alternate to US Route 51. That's because Highway 47 loops back to US Route 51 to Manitowish so it can conclude its journey.
My photo of a route marker for Wisconsin Highway 47 is from the intersection with US Route 51 in Woodruff. Northbound travelers on US Route 51 use the signage depicted to decide how they want to navigate through this crossroads. This photo was taken in December 2017 during a weekend drive up to northern and northeastern portions of the state of Wisconsin. Back to the Wisconsin main page. Back to the home page.
