^Wisconsin 48 and Wisconsin 87 head northward toward Grantsburg from the point where they converge, July 2025.
Wisconsin Highway 48 runs from Grantsburg to Exeland in northwestern Wisconsin. It is mainly an east-west route, but it has several intermittent jogs taking it north and south. The eastern end at Exeland is at Wisconsin Highway 40, just south of Wisconsin Highway 70. Wisconsin Highway 48 goes westward from there, passing through Birchwood. Next, it crosses US Route 53 at Rice Lake. It jogs north along Wisconsin 35 from Luck to Frederic, where it turns back toward the west. The final stretch of Wisconsin Highway 48 converges with Wisconsin Highway 87 for a few miles. Both Highways 48 and 87 end at the same time, at Wisconsin Highway 70. This terminus is about three miles from the Minnesota state line.
