^A guide marker as Wisconsin Highway 60 makes a turn in Wauzeka, September 2019.
Wisconsin Highway 60 is an east-west highway that stretches across the whole of southern Wisconsin, from a town on the Mississippi River to a town on the shores of Lake Michigan. The western beginning of Wisconsin Highway 60 is at US Route 18's approach to its bridge over the Mississippi River. That bridge bringing people into Prairie du Chien is connected to an intersection with a roadway to the south, that serves as sort of a bypass around Prairie du Chien. That roadway is the first part of Highway 60. US Route 18 also follows this bypass, but when the two highways reach the Wisconsin River, they split up. US Route 18 opts to continue southeast across the river, and Wisconsin Highway 60 heads upstream along the river's northern bank. Highway 60 continues eastward, through Wauzeka, to Gotham, where it joins US Route 14 east into Spring Green. In that town, US Route 14 crosses the river southward, while Wisconsin Highway 60 insists on staying on the north side of the Wisconsin River. At Sauk City, Wisconsin Highway 60 crosses the river, because the river's course turns northward. Highway 60 continues east through Lodi and Arlington to Columbus. Now in the eastern half of Wisconsin (east of Interstate 39), Wisconsin Highway 60 maintains its easterly direction through farm country. It serves Hartford, Slinger, and Jackson before reaching Grafton. The eastern end of Wisconsin Highway 60 is at Interstate 43 on the east side of Grafton; this terminus is less than two miles from Lake Michigan's shoreline.
My photo of a route marker for Wisconsin Highway 60 shows a dual trailblazer along a concurrency with Wisconsin Highway 78 in Sauk City. Those leaving US Route 12 on the state highway stemming to the north understand that Highways 60 and 78 are both heading away from US Route 12 on this surface road that spurs into downtown Sauk City. This photo was taken in August 2015 as I was using US Route 12 to get to the Twin Cities. Back to the Wisconsin main page. Back to the home page.
