Interstate 27 is a rather short north-south freeway connecting Amarillo to Lubbock in the northern panhandle of Texas. The northern end of Interstate 27 occurs at Interstate 40 on the south end of downtown Amarillo. From the interchange serving as the northern terminus, the carriageways of Interstate 27 continue north from the interchange as US Route 87 and US Route 287, which serve downtown Amarillo. Interstate 27 heads south from here through Canyon and Happy before reaching Lubbock. 123 miles after its point of beginning, Interstate 27 reaches its southern end at Loop 289, a circumferential freeway, on the south side of Lubbock. In other words, Interstate 27 goes through the heart of Lubbock before ending on the south side of town. Despite the fact that other Interstates in Texas have speed limits set at 80 miles per hour, the speed limit along Interstate 27 is set at 75 miles per hour. It's amazing to think that a speed limit of 75 M.P.H. could be seen as highly conservative to some people, but that's Texas for you!
My photo of Interstate 27 signage comes from the interchange with Hillside Road in Amarillo, labeled as "Exit 119A". This guide marker points out an onramp to northbound Interstate 27, communicating to those on the northbound frontage road. This photo was taken during my southwestern trip of October 2024.
