In Ohio, US Route 22 runs east-northeasterly from its inception in Cincinnati to Steubenville. Beyond Steubenville, US Route 22 will proceed to Pittsburgh and the New York City area. The western end in Cincinnati occurs on the west side of downtown, where US Route 22 splits away from US Route 27, US Route 127, and US Route 42 (all three form a concurrent triplicate). US Route 22 runs northeasterly into the suburbs, dancing back and forth around Interstate 71's northeastern alignment. As US Route 22 leaves the Cincinnati area, it opts for a more east-northeasterly path, while Interstate 71 proceeds northeast toward Columbus. US Route 22 serves many important towns and county seats in southern Ohio, like Wilmington, Washington Court House, Circleville and Lancaster, where US Route 22 crosses US Route 33. US Route 22 meets US Route 40 in Zanesville, and the two routes share pavement until they reach Cambridge. US Route 22 carries its east-northeasterly character through Cadiz in eastern Ohio, and it picks up some expressway characteristics here, too. The expressway phase of US Route 22 carries onward into Steubenville, where US Route 22 exits onto a bridge across the Ohio River into the northern peninsula of West Virginia.
My photo of US Route 22 in Ohio comes from a junction with Ohio Route 800 just south of Freeport, a small town in eastern Ohio. At this point, a westward US Route 22 joins Ohio Route 800 south for a brief duplex, before the routes split apart just to the south. The signage shows the westbound travelers on US Route 22 what's going on. This photo was taken at the northern extent of my circuitous tour around the southeastern quarter of Ohio in March 2021.
