^Looking east from the junction with US Route 61 in Fennimore, October 2016.
In Wisconsin, US Route 41 is a major north-south highway serving eastern Wisconsin. It provides transportation to Marinette, Oconto, Green Bay, the Lake Winnebago area, Milwaukee, and the Racine-Kenosha area. It is mostly a freeway or expressway for its entire length in Wisconsin. US Route 41 crosses out of Illinois concurrent with Interstate 94. For that reason, US Route 41 is a freeway from the Illinois state line, through the Racine-Kenosha area, up into Milwaukee. At the Mitchell Interchange, US Route 41 merges onto Interstate 894 west, and it follows all of Interstate 894 to the Zoo Interchange on the west side of the Milwaukee metro area. US Route 41 continues northward as a freeway also carrying the name of Interstate 41. That freeway meanders northwestward to Fond du Lac and Oshkosh, by Lake Winnebago. This will be the western extent of US Route 41's routing across Wisconsin, as the route bends northeasterly at Appleton, so it can approach Green Bay. Interstate 41 and US Route 41 (they're the same road) form the western element of a ring of freeways around the heart of Green Bay. At the northwest corner of this ring, Interstate 41 ends, but US Route 41 carries on toward the north, picking up a concurrency with US Route 141. At Abrams, Wisconsin, US Route 41 splits from US Route 141, and it once again refuses to take the most direct path northward. Instead of doing that, US Route 41 angles northeast to serve communities on the northwest shore of Green Bay (referring to the actual bay comprising part of Lake Michigan). US Route 41 passes through Oconto and Peshtigo, and then it arrives at Marinette, a city on the Michigan border. The mileage through Marinette is the only real mileage in Wisconsin where US Route 41 is a surface street. US Route 41 crosses the Menominee River into Menominee, Michigan, and that concludes US Route 41's journey through Wisconsin.
My photo of a route marker for US Route 41 in Wisconsin comes from an interchange with County Road B north of Green Bay. Drivers in the eastbound lane of County Road B use the sign in the picture to find the southbound onramp to US Routes 41 and 141. This photo was taken during a trip to northeastern Wisconsin in December 2017. Back to the Wisconsin main page. Back to the home page.
