US Route 177 runs north-south across the middle, or backbone, of Oklahoma. It lies just east of the corridor shared by US Route 77 and Interstate 35. That means it will pass through areas east of Perry, Oklahoma City, and Ardmore, instead serving areas like Stillwater, Shawnee, and Dickson. The northern end of US Route 177 lies in South Haven, Kansas, just north of the Oklahoma state line. From that northern extent at US Route 81, US Route 177 heads south through Blackwell, turning east along US Route 60 to Ponca City. At Ponca City, US Route 177 turns south to serve most of its purpose, serving central Oklahoma. It passes through Stillwater, Shawnee, and Tecumseh to reach Dickson, Oklahoma. There, US Route 177 jerks to the east so it can meet its ultimate goal of reaching US Route 70 in Madill, Oklahoma. This is not far from the Texas border.
My photo of US Route 177 comes from the area near Shawnee, Oklahoma, where US Route 177 meets US Route 270 and Interstate 40. US Route 270 has joined Interstate 40 west by this point, but Oklahoma still signs a former portion of US Route 270 as Oklahoma State Highway 270, which begins just north of the Interstate at US Route 177. This photo was taken just north of Interstate 40, and it shows signage seen by northbound travelers on US Route 177. The state route spur begins just a head with a turn to the left. This picture was taken during the southwest trip through New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma in October 2024.
