In Wisconsin, US Route 61 runs north-south in the southwestern part of the state. Its time in Wisconsin is bookended by two crossings over the Mississippi River: one is at Dubuque, Iowa, and the other is at La Crosse, Wisconsin. The journey of US Route 61 through southwestern Wisconsin begins in La Crosse, crossing out of Minnesota on the same bridge used by US Route 14. US Route 61 follows US Route 14 southeast out of La Crosse. The routes stay conjoined for almost forty miles, passing through Viroqua. At Readstown, the two US Highways finally split apart. US Route 61 is now free to propel southward. US Route 61 passes through Soldiers Grove to cross the Wisconsin River at Boscobel. It meets US Route 18 at Fennimore, and then it serves Lancaster. At Tennyson, near Potosi, US Route 61 angles southeast for a short bit to join US Route 151 south. Both US Highways ride together over a bridge in the very southwest corner of Wisconsin, out of the state and into Dubuque, Iowa.
