Wisconsin Highway 13 is a long and important highway in the state of Wisconsin, connecting Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin Rapids, Marshfield, Ashland, Bayfield, and Superior. The southern point of beginning is along Interstates 90 and 94 in Wisconsin Dells, From there, Wisconsin 13 heads northward to Wisconsin Rapids. North of the Rapids, Wisconsin 13 jogs westerly on US Route 10 to Marshfield, where it turns northerly again. This northerly segment is long, bringing travelers all the way north to Ashland, along Lake Superior. Though the highway has reached a town along Lake Superior, that doesn't mean Wisconsin 13 is done yet. It jogs a bit west along US Route 2 to turn northward once again, with the mission of serving communities on the northern "horn" of Wisconsin. Wisconsin 13 serves Bayfield, gateway to the Apostle Islands. It encounters the northern reaches of the "horn" protruding into Lake Superior, and then it turns toward the west-southwest. This west-southwest portion of Wisconsin 13 is the final stretch, and Wisconsin 13 ends at US Route 2 just east of Superior and Duluth, Minnesota.
My photo of a route marker for Wisconsin Highway 13 is from Marshfield, at its junction with Wisconsin Highway 97. Southbound travelers on Wisconsin 13 see this sign pointing out the upcoming left turn onto Wisconsin 97. This photo was taken in August, 2020, on the way north to Ashland on the first day of a trip that would involve lots of sightseeing in both peninsulas of Michigan.
