^Wisconsin 173 continues north from the point where it joins Wisconsin Highway 80 northward at Babcock, August 2020.

Wisconsin Highway 173 is a diagonal route between Tomah and Wisconsin Rapids. It doesn't quite reach either of those two towns, but it almost reaches both of them. The southwestern end is at Wisconsin Highway 21, just east of Interstate 94. From here, Wisconsin Highway 173 proceeds toward the northeast. Midway through the route, it joins Wisconsin Highway 80 northward for a short while. Beyond that, Highway 173 does its own thing once again, aiming for areas toward the northeast. It settles on an eastward direction eventually, entering Nekoosa, a town just downstream (southwest) of Wisconsin Rapids. Within view of Nekoosa's bridge over the Wisconsin River, Wisconsin Highway 73 comes from the north to cut the route off and take over as the route designation using the bridge. This is where Wisconsin Highway 173 ends.
