^Looking north where northward traffic on Wisconsin 26 leaves Rosendale, February 2022.
Wisconsin Highway 26 is an important highway joining Oshkosh to Janesville, serving other communities along the way. It begins in south-central Wisconsin, at Janesville, and it runs north-northeasterly toward the cities on the west side of Lake Winnebago. The southern point of beginning is at an intersection with US Route 51 in downtown Janesville, and Highway 26 heads north-northeasterly toward Milton at first. After crossing under US Route 14, Interstate 90, and Interstate 39, Wisconsin Highway 26 becomes a fully-fledged expressway. This expressway carries Highway 26 past Milton, Fort Atkinson, and Jefferson. Beyond Jefferson, Highway 26 becomes a rural highway for a while, pressing beyond Interstate 94. Soon after the interaction with Interstate 94, Highway 26 becomes an expressway bypass again; this time, it skirts around the west side of Watertown. This bypass ends shortly, and Highway 26 is a rural two-lane road again after passing Watertown. The route heads more northerly, losing its easterly tilt, bound for Waupun. At Waupun, Highway 26 joins the US Route 151 expressway northeastward for a short spell, soon straightening out onto its own northward roadway yet again. Highway 26 intersects Highway 23 at Rosendale, and it then turns northeastward toward Oshkosh. Before Highway 26 can reach downtown Oshkosh, it is cut off by Interstate 41, which carries most traffic further northward at Highway 26 ends.
My photo of a route marker for Wisconsin Highway 26 is a northbound trailblazer that appears at an intersection with a county road about 4 miles southwest of the state highway's northern end. This reassurance marker helps people understand that they are continuing north on Highway 26, while they are about 7 miles southwest of Oshkosh. This photo was taken in February 2022 during my trip around interior eastern Wisconsin. Back to the Michigan main page. Back to the home page.
