^Looking north along Wisconsin 34 from the eastern junction with US Route 10, September 2025.
Wisconsin Highway 34 is a short north-south highway in central Wisconsin. As Interstate 39 and US Route 51 descend southward from Wausau, they soon reach a point where they shuffle toward the southeast. That point is near the tiny town of Knowlton, home of a bridge over the Wisconsin River, which parallels Interstate 39 to the west. At this location, Wisconsin Highway 34 is born, created for the purpose of bringing southward travelers a bit toward the southwest, as opposed to the southeast-bound Interstate 39. Here, at Knowlton, Wisconsin Highway 34 starts out for a short jog toward the west, then immediately dives southward over the Wisconsin River bridge. Highway 34 continues with the overall objective of reaching Wisconsin Rapids. The southward movement of Highway 34 is interrupted by a westward concurrency along US Route 10. The concurrency passes Junction City before breaking apart with Highway 34 resuming a southward direction on a roadway shared with Wisconsin Highway 13. Next, Highway 34 passes through Rudolph. And after that, there's nothing else for the route to accomplish besides pulling into Wisconsin Rapids and proving access to that town. The south end of Highway 34 is at Wisconsin Highway 73 along the western bank of the Wisconsin River.
My photo of a route marker for Wisconsin Highway 34 comes from a northbound exit ramp from Interstate 39. Highway 34 begins here with a westward orientation, that soon turns to a southward orientation once the route gets going. This photo was taken in December 2017 on the way up to northeastern Wisconsin. Back to the Wisconsin main page. Back to the home page.
