Wisconsin Highway 36 is a northeast-southwest highway in southwestern Wisconsin. It runs from Springfield, a tiny town west of Burlington, to the south side of Milwaukee. The origin of the route, in Springfield, is at Wisconsin Highway 120, several miles north of Lake Geneva. Wisconsin Highway 36 starts off toward the east, meeting Wisconsin Highway 11 as it approaches Burlington. Drivers meeting this junction have a choice: either they can use the business alignment of Wisconsin Highway 36 through downtown Burlington, or they can use the bypass alignment that uses the same freeway bypass as Wisconsin Highway 11. Wisconsin Highway 83 joins Wisconsin Highway 36 northeastward until Waterford, where it crosses Wisconsin Highway 20. Wisconsin Highway 36 stays a four-lane highway for the rest of its length, carrying travelers toward the northeast, into Franklin. Wisconsin Highway 36 passes through Greendale, and then it meets Interstates 894 and 43 (as a single freeway). The northeast end of Wisconsin Highway 36 is on the south side of Milwaukee, at Wisconsin Highway 241.
