^Looking east along Wisconsin 49 in Waupun, February 2022.
Wisconsin Highway 49 is a highway running east and south from central Wisconsin to near-southeast Wisconsin. It begins east of Wausau and moves southeasterly overall, ending south of Fond du Lac. It has a hard time deciding if it wants to be a north-south route or an east-west route. The northern end of Wisconsin Highway 49 is at Wisconsin Highway 29's freeway, just west of Wittenburg, or 20 miles east of Wausau. The first portion of Highway 49 points southerly, through Iola to Waupaca. At Waupaca, Highway 49 joins US Route 10 eastward for a while. Just beyond Weyauwega, Highway 49 splits from US Route 10 to pass through open terrain. It serves the town of Berlin, and then it joins Wisconsin Highway 23 east near Green Lake. At Ripon, Highway 49 turns south again, asserting its independence from Wisconsin Highway 23, but at Waupun, it turns easterly again. Beyond Waupun, the route sticks with an eastward course for the rest of its route. Highway 49 ends at Interstate 41 on the north side of Lomira, south of Fond du Lac.
My photo of a route marker for Wisconsin Highway 49 shows this reassurance marker in Waupun. It faces east at westbound travelers to tell them that this way is how they can reach the northward continuation of Highway 49. This photo was taken in February 2022, during a trip around inner portions of eastern Wisconsin. Back to the Wisconsin main page. Back to the home page.
