Wisconsin Highway 54 is a very long east-west highway spanning across central Wisconsin, from Algoma on Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River bridge leading into Winona, Minnesota. Wisconsin Highway 54 has its roots in Algoma, in northeastern Kewaunee County, at the base of the Door Peninsula. From here, Wisconsin Highway 54 goes westerly, setting its sights on Green Bay. It has a brief stint as an expressway, joining Wisconsin Highway 57 westward as they approach Green Bay. But within the city limits, Wisconsin Highway 54 is a surface street. Shiocton and New London are the next targets for Highway 54 as it continues westward. It crosses the northwest-angled US Route 10 in Waupaca, and then, it meets Interstate 39 at Plover. Between Plover and Wisconsin Rapids, Highway 54 parallels the Wisconsin River to the south. But in Wisconsin Rapids, the highway crosses the river which decides to flow southward. Next, Highway 54 passes through rural areas bound for Black River Falls, where it meets Interstate 94 and US Route 12. It is here that Highway 54 decides to dive southward to Melrose before continuing west. Near Galesville, Wisconsin Highway 54 begins a stretch of revolving concurrencies: first with US Route 53, then with Wisconsin Highway 93. Next, Wisconsin Highway 35 turns westerly off of its otherwise northward course, to follow the Mississippi River upstream. Finally, Wisconsin Highway 54 gets a chance to carry vehicles westward to the Mississippi River and beyond, as it ends crossing the river, and thus the Minnesota border. This river crossing is the primary river crossing to Winona, Minnesota.

My photo of a route marker for Wisconsin Highway 54 shows an eastbound trailblazer found at an intersection in the unincorporated place called Centerville. This is a strange intersection. Wisconsin Highway 93 comes from the north to turn eastward, and Wisconsin Highway 35 comes from the south to turn westward. Highways 93 and 35 ricochet off of each other, but Wisconsin Highway 54 is crossing normally from west to east at the same time. This photo was taken in July 2025 during my trip to western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota.
