US Route 158 is a short east-west US highway in the state of North Carolina, ending up on the Outer Banks. The western end of US Route 158 is in Mocksville, a little bit southwest of Winston-Salem. US Route 158 then runs northeasterly through Winston-Salem. At Reidsville, where US Route 158 meets US Route 29, US Route 158 straightens out a bit, heading eastward across northern North Carolina. At Elizabeth City, US Route 158 meets US Route 17 and starts to bend southeasterly toward the Outer Banks. US Route 158 boards a bridge comprising one of the two ways to enter the Outer Banks without use of a ferry or rocket thrusters. US Route 158 enters Kitty Hawk, and continues south on the barrier islands to end at US Route 64 in Nags Head. Note that US Route 158 never meets its parent route of US Route 58, though I believe US Route 158 formerly extended northwest to meet US Route 58 at one point in history.
US Route 158 had a different photo featured on this page in the past, but I have decided to replace that photo with a new, improved one. However, the old photo is still viewable at the bottom of this page.
My new photo for US Route 158 signage shows a series of guide markers along Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. These signs are posted for southbound travelers on the arterial named for the civil rights hero. Those southbound travelers can now locate the left turn onto US Route 158, thanks to this signage, and US Route 158 is following the US Route 421 freeway in this area. This photo was taken as I was driving south along US Route 52 to get to the Carolinas for a vacation in June 2024 (US Route 52 is less than a mile to the west).
My older photo for US Route 158 shows the point where US Route 158 splits from Business US Route 17 in Elizabeth City. The aperture looks south, at this point where US Route 158 turns from southerly to easterly to conclude a concurrency with the business route. US Route 17's business alignment continues south into the background, though a truck route version of the business route version of US Route 17 turns left here, I guess. North Carolina even has bannered routes of bannered routes. This makes me want to bury my head in my hands and cry. This photo was taken in April, 2024, during a part of my trip across the Delmarva and through the Carolinas. Back to the nationwide main page. Back to the home page.
