Ohio State Route 13 is a long route that runs north-south through the middle of Ohio, a bit east of the state's exact middle. It serves Huron, Norwalk, Mansfield, Mount Vernon, Newark, Athens, and other towns. The northern end of Ohio Route 13, in Huron, is at US Route 6 in the downtown of the city. Ohio Route 13 then passes through an interchange with Ohio Route 2, which forms a bypass around Huron. The highway then serves Milan and Norwalk. In Norwalk, Ohio Route 13 begins a 12-mile concurrency with US Route 250, until reaching the small town of Fitchville. While US Route 250 continues southeast to Ashland, Ohio Route 13 opts for a more southerly course toward Mansfield. In fact, Ohio Route 13 comprises the main north-south thoroughfare through Mansfield. Next, Ohio Route 13 heads for Fredericktown and Mount Vernon, in Knox County. Ohio Route 13 is the main north-south corridor through Mount Vernon, playing a similar role to its role in Mansfield. Ohio Route 13 moves on to Utica and Newark, Ohio. It meets the Ohio Route 16 freeway in Newark, and then heads for an interchange with Interstate 70 several miles to the south. In Perry County, Ohio Route 13 bends easterly and southeasterly to pass through Somerset and New Lexington. At New Lexington, Ohio Route 13 and Ohio Route 93 decide to switch places; both routes use Ohio Route 37 to make this happen, forming a triplicate concurrency. When Ohio Route 13 has gotten far enough eastward to take the place of Ohio Route 93 southward, it bends southerly again through Corning and into Athens County. Ohio Route 13 ends on the north side of Athens, at an intersection that's part of an interchange between US Route 33 and Ohio Route 550. Ohio Route 550 comes from the northeast to also end at the US Route 33 freeway; as this happens, Ohio Route 13 terminates at an intersection also accessed by pair of folded diamond ramps.
My photo of Ohio State Route 13 signage comes from the southern terminus at Athens. This pair of junction markers serves southbound travelers on Ohio Route 550, and it alerts them to the upcoming interactions with both US Route 33 and Ohio Route 13. The next intersection encountered by these travelers will take drivers to US Route 33 northbound if they turn left (it's a hook-shaped onramp), or they can turn right onto Ohio Route 13's beginning. This photo was taken as I was using US Route 33 to get toward Virginia, in April 2021. Back to Ohio Routes 1 through 99. Back to the Ohio main page. Back to the home page.
