Interstate 22 is an Interstate designation unveiled in the last decade or so, for a mostly-completed highway overlaying US Route 78 from Memphis, Tennessee, to Birmingham, Alabama. Only the northwestern bit on the south side of Memphis hasn't been completed yet. For now, traffic can use Interstate 55 south to Interstate 269 east to access Interstate 22 from Memphis. From Memphis, Interstate 22 heads southeast through northern Mississippi, including Tupelo. It continues into Alabama carrying US Route 78, which stays duplexed until Interstate 22's last ten miles approaching Birmingham. The eastern end is at Interstate 65 near Fultondale, on the northern outskirts of Birmingham, Alabama.
My photo of Interstate 22 markers comes from Interstate 22's interchange with US Route 43 near Hamilton, Alabama. The pair of guide markers shown faces south for northbound traffic on US Route 43, where the road meets the eastbound onramp to Interstate 22. This part of US Route 43 is concurrent with US Route 278. This photo was taken during the early part of the second Gulf Coast trip in October 2016. Back to the nationwide main page.
