Indiana State Route 558 is the northerly of the two high-numbered spurs off of US Route 231 heading east into the Naval Support facility at Crane (the other is Indiana Route 645). This is the route that actually passes through the town of Crane, that gave the Naval Support facility its moniker. The eastern end is a gate into the United States military-owned property itself. The western end of Indiana Route 558, at US Route 231 and a concurrent Indiana Route 58, is in the very northeastern corner of Daviess County, whereas most of the route's remainder sits in Martin County.
