^Looking west at the bend in Iowa 48 at County Highway J20, just east of Essex, October 2021.
Iowa Route 48 is a north-south highway in southwestern Iowa. As the highway progresses southerly, it has two significant jogs toward the west, including the final southernmost portion that leads to Shenandoah. Shenandoah is home to Iowa Route 48's southwestern terminus, which sits along US Route 59 north of Iowa Route 2. The northern end of Iowa Route 48 is at US Route 6, southwest of Atlantic. Between its endpoints, Iowa Route 48 passes through Griswold, Elliott, Red Oak, and Essex.
My photo for Iowa Route 48 is the northbound trailblazer at the US Route 34 intersection in Red Oak. I stood facing north when taking this photo of the signage, which faces south toward the four-way intersection. This photo was taken along the trip across southern and western Iowa in October 2021.

Iowa 48 approaches Shenandoah from the north, but it is diverted off toward the west so it can reach US Route 59 soon after.
A guide assembly facing east at those reaching the southern end of Iowa 44 in Shenandoah. This end occurs at US Route 59 on the north side of town.
