US Route 181 is a route from San Antonio southeast to Corpus Christi in Texas. Interstate 37 also has the same cities as endpoints, but US Route 181 parallels Interstate 37 to the northeast on a separate corridor. At the northwest end of US Route 181, the highway joins Interstate 37 for that freeway's final ten miles into San Antonio. The southeast end of US Route 181 meets Gregory at the north end of Nueces Bay, and then it turns to cross the bay southward into Corpus Christi. The central interchange in Corpus Christi serves as the south end of US Route 181, the south end of Interstate 37, and the north end of Texas Highway 286.
My photo of US Route 181 is on Spur Route 122 in Texas, near the northern end of US Route 181. Just before entering San Antonio, US Route 181 heads northwest and diverts onto a partial interchange that joins Interstate 37. At that diversion, it leaves Spur Route 122 in its wake, which continues northwest as a surface road. When taking this photo, I was looking southeast at the end of Spur Route 122. Turning left leads to US Route 181 southbound, even though the sign has an "ahead arrow" at a T-intersection. That might be a dangerous combination, actually. Back to the nationwide main page.
