US Route 84 runs east-west cross the southeastern United States, and continues west to northern New Mexico before curling northward into southern Colorado in its last breath. The eastern end of US Route 84 is at Interstate 95 in the town of Midway, Georgia; this is just south of Savannah near the Atlantic coastline. From there, US Route 84 runs westerly through southern Georgia, southern Alabama, southern Mississippi, and upstate Louisiana. From there, US Route 84 cuts west across the middle latitude of Texas, before stopping halfway through the state to turn northwesterly to Abilene, Texas; Lubbock, Texas; and Clovis, New Mexico. In New Mexico, US Route 84 continues winding northwesterly through Santa Fe to end in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, at US Route 160. I will add that the northwestern stretch of US Route 84 between Santa Fe and Chama, New Mexico, is one of the most beautiful stretches of US highway I have ever seen.
An older photo of US Route 84 was once featured on this page, but a newer, better photo of US Route 84 has since replaced it. The older photo is still available for viewing, however; it was simply moved to the bottom of this page.
My photo of US Route 84 comes from the vicinity of Lubbock, Texas. The trailblazer shown is placed a mile or so northwest of the Loop 289 freeway, which crosses US Route 84 on the northwest side of town. Texas likes to place trailblazers frequently; it's hard to go two miles down a primary Texas highway without seeing one. The signage shown is simply one of those many frequently-placed trailblazers, seen by those moving toward the southeast into Lubbock. This photo was taken during the Southwest trip of October 2024.
My former featured photo for US Route 84 appears below. It is also from Texas.
My former photo for US Route 84 was taken in Waco, Texas, on an offramp from Interstate 35 northbound. I was on the way home from my massive western detour into Texas, part of the October 2014 trip to the Gulf Coast region. The sign assembly in this photo was discovered serendipitously; I wasn't planning to photograph US Route 84 until my Southwest trip to New Mexico! But lo and behold, once I did travel to New Mexico, I did end up replacing this photo (though my replacement photo would hail from Texas, too, and not New Mexico).
