Until about thirty years ago, Illinois Route 5 was the designation for all of what we now know as Interstate 88; now, the only remnant of the Illinois Route 5 designation is the surface road continuation west into the Quad Cities. Illinois Route 5's western end is at US Route 67, and it runs east along the south side of Rock Island Moline, curving northward and eastward again to connect to the western end of Interstate 88 at Interstate 80.

Illinois 5 is a two-lane surface street until it joins the Milan Beltway, becoming a wide 4-lane highway:
