^Looking north from Exit 28 to Belle Valley, June 2024.
Interstate 77 runs north-south, bisecting the eastern half of Ohio from Cleveland to Marietta. Eventually, it reaches Columbia, South Carolina, but in Ohio, it serves Metro Cleveland, Akron, Canton, and Cambridge. The northern end merges with Interstate 90 eastward in downtown Cleveland. Looking southward from there, Interstate 77 sets out for Akron, where it meets Interstate 76. It meets Interstate 76 and joins it eastward for a short spell before returning to a southerly direction. Interstate 277 spurs off of Interstate 77 for those looking for a shortcut between Interstate 77's south leg and Interstate 76's west leg. Interstate 77 then proceeds southward through Canton, where it is the only Interstate highway found in the city. It does meet US Route 30 and US Route 62 in Canton, though, and these two are freeways, albeit ephemerally. The drive along Interstate 77 gets hillier here, as Interstate 77 enters Ohio's Appalachian hills. It meets Interstate 70 at Cambridge, and then heads south for the Ohio River. Marietta marks the southern extent of Interstate 77 in Ohio, and it is here that the highway crosses the Ohio River into the area around Parkersburg, West Virginia.
As with all of the Ohio Interstate pages, more information and a full exit list will come in the future. For now, enjoy this general information and a photo of the signage, in a similar fashion to how I do the state and US highway pages.
My photo of Interstate 77 in Ohio comes from the small town of Belle Valley, Ohio, south of Cambridge. At this town, Interstate 77 crosses Ohio Route 821. As this is 28 miles north of Interstate 77's entrance into Ohio from West Virginia, the exits at this interchange are labeled "Exit 28", if you want specifics. The guide marker faces northwesterly at southeasterly travelers on Ohio Route 821, helping them locate the upcoming left turn onto the northbound onramp. This photo was taken in March 2021, during my exhaustive tour around the southeastern quarter of Ohio. (Ohio Route 821 is a bit of a surface alternate to Interstate 77 in this area, and it got its number from US Route 21, which used to be the route down Interstate 77's corridor before the Interstates were built.)
