​Ohio State Route 172 runs east-west in eastern Ohio, serving as main surface routes through Massillon and Canton.  It seems to be a business alternate to US Route 30, for as long as that highway is a freeway in eastern Ohio.  The western end of Ohio Route 172 splits from US Route 30 west of Massillon. From there, the route runs down main streets that are central to Massillon and Canton.  On the east side of Canton, US Route 30 bails from its freeway and joins Ohio Route 172 east, to the village of East Canton.  Then, Ohio Route 172 splits from US Route 30; both routes continue roughly toward the east, but Ohio Route 172 takes a more rural and more northerly course.  The two routes converge once again just west of Lisbon, but this is where Ohio Route 172 ends.

My photo of Ohio State Route 172 comes from its junction with Ohio Route 687, in Canton.  This junction, marking the southern end of Ohio Route 687, is on the west edge of downtown Canton.  A junction with Interstate 77 is in the background of the photo, which looks west at a westbound trailblazer. This photo was taken in October 2022, during the grand tour of the northeastern quarter of Ohio.​
