^Walking around downtown Mount Vernon, looking north from Chestnut Street (Ohio 13), October 2022.
Ohio State Route 3 connects Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland, just like Interstate 71 does, but it does so as a surface highway. It spawns at the Kentucky state line as US Route 22 crosses the Ohio River into Cincinnati. Ohio Route 3 follows US Route 22 through Cincinnati and beyond, to Washington Court House, to be exact. That's where Ohio Route 3 splits from US Route 22, but it joins US Route 62 instead. That concurrency with US Route 62 lasts until Columbus, where Ohio Route 3 finally gets the chance to start out on its own. That phase of independence isn't long though, because Ohio Route 3 starts to piggyback on US Route 36 in Sunbury. At Mount Vernon, Ohio Route 3 becomes independent and stays independent all the way north to Metro Cleveland. This stretch from Mount Vernon is more north-south whereas the remainder of the route went northeast-southwest. As Ohio Route 3 reaches the Cleveland area, it joins together with yet another US highway: US Route 42. From Parma north into the city, Ohio Route 3 and US Route 42 march together. They join US Route 6 and US Route 20 east down Detroit Avenue to Cleveland's Public Square, home to many a route terminus. Ohio Route 3 and US Route 42 both are included in the list of routes which end at Public Square. Note that, since the entire portion of the route southwest of Columbus is not independent of other routes, some argue that it should be either deleted or unsigned southwest of Columbus.
My photo of Ohio State Route 3 signage comes from Sunbury, where Ohio Route 3 first joins US Route 36 toward the east. The signage here faces southwesterly to travelers that turned onto the newly-formed concurrency. At this intersection, Ohio Route 37 is crossing from northwest to southeast, as US Route 36 is turning from southeasterly to northeasterly. This photo was taken in October 2022 as I was moving from Columbus toward a tour around northeast Ohio. Back to Ohio Routes 1 through 99. Back to the Ohio main page. Back to the home page.
