Ohio State Route 540 is a short east-west route in Logan County, stemming easterly from Bellefontaine. The western end in Bellefontaine occurs at the city's center, which is also traversed by Ohio Route 47 and US Route 68. Ohio Route 540 runs easterly along Sandusky Avenue, leaving town by crossing an interchange with US Route 33. The route undergoes a tiny jog to the south near Ohio Caverns (the crossroad to the caverns used to be Ohio Route 533). After eight miles, Ohio Route 540 ends at Ohio Route 292 a few miles west of West Mansfield, Ohio (no relation to Mansfield, Ohio itself).
My photo for Ohio Route 540 comes from the tiny jog it follows along a local road that leads to the Ohio Caverns. The westerly course of Ohio Route 540 jumps northerly for a very short bit, and the photo looks north at the north end of the jog. A guide marker shows drivers that Ohio Route 540 is about to resume traveling in a westward direction after having just turned toward the north. This photo was taken on Leap Day in 2016, as I was heading home from Columbus along the US Route 33 corridor.
