Illinois Route 61 zigzags across west-central Illinois, in areas north and northeast of Quincy.  It begins near the Mississippi River and goes east, north, east, and north to end west of Macomb.

​Illinois 61's western end is at Illinois 96 in Ursa, the next town north of Quincy:

Having started heading west from Ursa, Illinois 61 joins Illinois 336 north at Mendon:

After about 5 miles of following Illinois 336 northward, Illinois 61 heads east independently again:

Illinois 61 heads east for no more than eight miles, Illinois 61 joins Illinois 94 north:

At Bowen, Illinois 61 turns easterly again, as Illinois 94 splits and heads farther north:

At Augusta, Illinois 101 begins and heads east at Illinois 61, which turns northerly yet again:

After passing northward through Plymouth, Illinois, Illinois 61 ends at US Route 136, which now also carries another piece of the Illinois 336 designation, just west of the town of Tennessee.
