Iowa Route 31 runs northeast-southwest in northwestern Iowa, in an area east of Sioux City.  The northeastern terminus of Iowa Route 31 sits just south of Cherokee, along US Route 59.  From there, Iowa Route 31 heads west to Quimby, then southwest through Correctionville to its southern end in Smithland at Iowa Route 141.  Whereas most Iowa highways follow segments of roadway aligned to one of the cardinal directions, Iowa Route 31 hardly ever aligns to a cardinal direction except for its initial east-west portion in the north.

My photo for Iowa Route 31 comes from its northern endpoint along US Route 59, just south of Cherokee.  I actually woke up on a foggy September morning in Cherokee, when my first recourse was to head south and snap this photo.  I started out the last day of my September 2019 trip to northern Iowa by taking this. The sign assembly depicted here faces north, so southbound traffic on US Route 59 can anticipate the point where they need to turn.
