Indiana State Route 44 runs east-west from Martinsville east to the Ohio state line near Liberty, where it becomes Ohio State Route 725. This is in central and east-central Indiana. The fate of the western endpoint is up in the air, as the surface road carrying Indiana State Route 37 is upgraded to a freeway that also carries Interstate 69. Indiana Route 44 has a gap in Franklin, between Indiana Route 144 and Interstate 65, making Indiana Route 44 discontinuous.
