Ohio State Route 56 runs northwest from Athens to near Urbana. Since the City of Athens deleted the state highway designations in the inner portion of town, Ohio Route 56 now begins on the west side of town, at Ohio Route 682. (Ohio Route 682 leads south to the US Route 33 and US Route 50 freeways.) Ohio Route 56 starts off by running westerly and northwesterly to Laurelville and Circleville. It joins US Route 22 west through Circleville, and then returns to its northwesterly behavior. Mount Sterling and London both get served by Ohio Route 56 as it continues northwest. The northwestern end of Ohio Route 56 is along Ohio Route 29, between Mechanicsburg and Urbana.
My photo of Ohio State Route 56 signage actually shows the northwestern end marker at Ohio Route 29. Like I said above, Ohio Route 56's northwestern endpoint is between Mechanicsburg and Urbana. The T-intersection with Ohio Route 29 is in the background of the photo. This photo was taken in June 2016 as I was driving home from Columbus.
