Illinois Route 242 is a sort of spur off of Illinois Route 142 in Wayne and Hamilton Counties. It starts at Illinois 142 in downtown McLeansboro and heads north while Illinois 142 diverts to the northwest toward Mount Vernon. After an interchange with Interstate 64, Illinois 242 promptly ends in Wayne City at Illinois 15.
