^Looking northeastward from the intersection with Ohio Route 603, southwest of Ashland, October 2022.
In Ohio, US Route 42 connects Cincinnati to Cleveland. It crosses the Ohio River from Kentucky into Cincinnati, and runs northeasterly all the way to Lake Erie. While Interstate 71, the modern counterpart of US Route 42, passes right through Columbus as it connects Cincinnati to Cleveland, US Route 42 skirts Columbus to the northwest. US Route 42 serves Lebanon, Xenia, and London before crossing north of Interstate 70, west of Columbus. The closest US Route 42 gets to Columbus is Plain City, which is kind of an exurb. Instead of Columbus, US Route 42 opts to pass through Delaware. From Delaware to Medina, US Route 42 parallels Interstate 71 to the west, serving Mansfield, Ashland, and Lodi. At Medina, US Route 42 runs straight north to Strongsville, where it bends northeasterly past Interstate 71, into the Cleveland suburbs. In Parma, US Route 42 picks up Ohio Route 3, and these two routes run concurrently to Cleveland's Public Square, where they both end. (The Public Square is where a boatload of other routes start or end.)
My photo of US Route 42 in Ohio comes from Ashland, where it runs concurrently with US Route 250 for a short distance. Ashland is an interesting case of a northwest-southeast US highway meeting a northeast-southwest US highway; this is a rare case, as relatively few US highways run on a diagonal. Both US highways bypass downtown Ashland, and these bypasses overlap on the east side of town. The pair of trailblazers seen in the photo faces northbound travelers leaving the intersection where the concurrency starts, between US Route 42 and US Route 250. This 4-way intersection where the concurrency starts is also where Ohio Route 96 starts heading westward. This photo was taken in October 2022, on the last day of my trip around northeastern Ohio.
