Interstate 19 is a freeway connecting Interstate 10 and Tucson, Arizona, to the Mexican border at Nogales, Arizona. For a major Interstate (numbered below 100), it is very short, requiring only an hour's time to drive its entire length. Remarkably, Interstate 19 is the only Interstate Highway to have its exit numbers and progress markers based in the metric system. The last and northernmost exit of Interstate 19 is an exit to Interstate 10, and the exit number of 102 refers to the 102nd and final kilometer of the highway. This is at the northern end in Tucson; the southern end in Nogales feeds into a Mexican border crossing. Nothing lies between these two cities in the Sonoran Desert besides a handful of small towns.
My photo for Interstate 19 comes from its first interchange south of Interstate 10 in Tucson, Arizona. At this interchange, Arizona Highway 86 reaches its eastern extent. The signage photographed faces west to eastbound travelers on Arizona Highway 86 reaching this single-point urban interchange with Interstate 19. This scene was photographed during a short visit to Arizona at the beginning of December, 2022.
