Ohio State Route 229 is a fairly long east-west route in northern and northeastern portions of central Ohio. It begins at Waldo, at Ohio Route 47, which tangentially is used to access US Route 23. Then, Ohio Route 229 heads east under US Route 23 to pass through Ashley, Marengo, and Sparta on the way to Mount Vernon. Ohio Route 229 continues east through Mount Vernon, where it meets US Route 36, but continues to the east. Ohio Route 229 will eventually end at US Route 36, but not until after it passes through Gambier. That eastern end at US Route 36 is near New Castle, in western Coshocton County.
