US Route 401 runs from northeastern North Carolina to central South Carolina. It runs south from US Route 1 at Norlina, North Carolina, through Raleigh to Fayetteville. At Fayetteville, US Route 401 bends southwesterly, joining US Route 15 into South Carolina. US Route 401 splits from US Route 15, just to flank that route to its southeast until ending in Sumter, another town that's also reached by US Route 15; in other words, US Route 401 is just an alternate route to US Route 15 in South Carolina. The southern end in Sumter bends west past US Route 15 to reach its final intersection with US Route 76 (the business alignment).
My photo of US Route 401 shows a sign assembly facing west, at the eastbound offramp from Interstate 20. The interchange home to this sign assembly is two interchanges west of Interstate 20's end in Florence, and it sits between the towns of Lamar and Darlington. This photo was taken as part of the detour around South Carolina in July 2019. Back to the nationwide main page. Back to the home page.
