In Ohio, US Route 24 cuts off the northwestern corner of the state, as it transitions from an easterly route in Indiana to a northerly route in Michigan. Overall, US Route 24's pathing in Ohio is northeasterly, or southwesterly. US Route 24 follows alongside the Maumee River for its entire stint in Ohio. Its business is to connect Toledo, Ohio, and Fort Wayne, Indiana. The western extent of US Route 24 in Ohio is its crossing of the Indiana state line, near Antwerp, Ohio. The highway is a rural expressway until it reaches Toledo, meaning that it functions just like a rural freeway, but with occasional at-grade intersections with low-volume side roads and driveways. Heading eastward into Ohio, US Route 24 travels along a northeasterly angle along the Maumee River, meeting US Route 127 near Cecil. It serves as a freeway bypass to Defiance and to Napoleon. US Route 24 meets Ohio Route 64 at Waterville, thence entering the Toledo metropolitan area. It reaches Maumee, linking with Interstate 475. As it crosses from Maumee into Toledo, passing under the Ohio Turnpike (Interstates 80 and 90; no access is provided), it starts to take an east-northeasterly path away from the Maumee River. About a mile from the Michigan border, US Route 24 turns onto the northward Telegraph Road. After crossing Ohio Route 184, US Route 24 crosses into southeasternmost Michigan.
My photo of US Route 24 in Ohio comes from Cecil, where it meets US Route 127. Just north of US Route 24, US Route 127 jogs eastward to a new alignment as it makes its overall northward journey. This photo comes from where US Route 127 begins to jog eastward; the aperture looks eastward down the former alignment of US Route 24 that US Route 127 uses to jog toward the east. A guide marker indicates to eastward travelers on this old alignment that the real US Route 24 is reached by a simple turn to the right. This photo was taken during a long drive on US Route 127 that I squeezed into a convoluted drive home from Columbus, in September 2017. Back to the Ohio US Highways page. Back to the Ohio main page.
