Illinois Route 56 is an east-west route through Chicago's western suburbs, that closely parallels the path of Interstate 88.  The western few miles are a freeway that connects Interstate 88 in North Aurora to US Route 30 in Sugar Grove; the remainder is an east-west surface road known as Butterfield Road.

The western end of Illinois 56 is an interchange with US Route 30 and Illinois 47 in Sugar Grove:

Illinois 56 goes through its freeway phase, turning northeasterly and then joining Interstate 88 east for a short duplex (remember that Interstate 88 is a tollway, so driving this section along the duplex costs money):

In North Aurora, Illinois 56 exits via Interstate 88's trumpet spur interchange to Illinois 31, to join that other state route north for a bit:

Illinois 56 will find its own stride as a surface route, departing Illinois 31 to head east through downtown North Aurora:

After crossing the Fox River, Illinois 56 crosses Illinois 25:

As Butterfield Road, Illinois 59 crosses Illinois 56 at Warrenville:

Illinois 56 meets a diamond interchange with Interstate 355, where Downers Grove meets Lombard:

Illinois 56 starts to run more northeasterly through Oak Brook, crossing Illinois 83 and Illinois 38 at a series of interchanges:

After crossing under Interstates 290 and 294 with no interchange, Illinois 56 ends in Bellwood at US Route 45 (concurrent with US Routes 12 and 20):
