Ohio State Route 124 is a very long route across southern Ohio. It exists in four separate phases. The first phase runs southeasterly from Ohio Route 124's point of beginning, along Ohio Route 134 in southern Clinton County. This is near the small town of Martinsville. From here, the first phase leads into Pike County, where Ohio Route 124 joins Ohio Route 32 east into Piketon. The second phase is a long concurrency with Ohio Route 32, from Pike County into Jackson County. Between Jackson and Wellston, Ohio Route 124 splits from Ohio Route 32 to enter its third phase, a rural eastward route to the Pomeroy area. Ohio Route 32 goes northeast to Athens, but Ohio Route 124 runs east to join Ohio Route 7 near Pomeroy, in Meigs County. At the junction where US Route 33 comes from the north to join Ohio Route 7 eastward, Ohio Route 124 turns south to the shore of the Ohio River. As Ohio Route 124 reaches the river, Ohio Route 833 continues with a right turn toward the west, but the fourth phase of Ohio Route 124 begins with a turn toward the east. The fourth phase is a riverside drive, in which Ohio Route 124 follows every bend in the Ohio River. It starts out going south into the lobe of Ohio's state outline that reaches over to Ravenswood, West Virginia, but it bends easterly and northerly to match the course of the river. When Ohio Route 124's northward progression reaches the riverside southeast corner of Athens County, it heads north to come to a close at US Route 50, between Coolville and Belpre.
My photo of Ohio State Route 124 comes from the transition between the third and fourth phases of the route, as described before. The waters of the Ohio River appear in the background of this photo, which looks west at the junction where Ohio Route 124 meets Ohio Route 833. Ohio Route 124 has just descended southerly from Ohio Route 7 and US Route 33, and now it is looking to turn left to follow the river upstream. Ohio Route 833 moves westerly, into the background, and Ohio Route 124 comes from the right, turning toward what lay at my back. The signage directs the westbound travelers on Ohio Route 124 to turn right if they want to continue down that same route, and it shows them how to reach Ohio Route 833. This photo was taken during the southeastern Ohio tour of March 2021. Back to Ohio Routes 100-199. Back to the Ohio main page. Back to the home page.
