^Looking east from Indiana 75 near Stilesville, August 2024.
US Route 40 in Indiana runs east-west across Indiana's middle, in locales including the Indianapolis area. It closely parallels Interstate 70 throughout Indiana, running from the Illinois border near Terre Haute, to the Ohio border at Richmond. In fact, the western extent of US Route 40 in Indiana, where it crosses the Illinois state line, is concurrent with Interstate 70 along the south side of Terre Haute, and the eastern extent meeting the Ohio border is at a cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 70. Like all US routes and state routes around Indianapolis, US Route 40 is routed around Indianapolis's along Interstate 465. US Route 40 follows that Interstate bypass around the south side of town, but Washington Street carries US Route 40 beyond Interstate 465 away from the city, on both sides of Indianapolis.
My photo for US Route 40 in Indiana was taken just east of Terre Haute, at the western end of Indiana Route 340. The guide assembly depicted helps eastbound travelers on US Route 40 to discern which way to go. This is at the tiny hamlet of Cloverland, Indiana. Back to the Indiana main page.
