Illinois Route 29 runs north-south in north-central and central Illinois, connecting the Illinois Valley region to Peoria, then Springfield, then Pana.  Illinois 29's northern end is in Spring Valley, at the west end of the Illinois Valley region, then follows the west bank of the Illinois River to Peoria.  After Peoria, Illinois 29 crosses the Illinois River and provides the most direct rural connection to Springfield, and Illinois 29's last segment runs southeast from Springfield to Pana.

Illinois 29's northern end is in Spring Valley, at the concurrency of US Route 6 and Illinois 89:

Illinois 29 starts out heading west, then bending south as the Illinois River bends to the south, and at Bureau Junction, Illinois 26 joins Illinois 29 south:

After a concurrency lasting a single mile, Illinois 26 splits from Illinois 29 to cross to the east side of the Illinois River:

Illinois 29 meets a spur from Interstate 180, which Illinois 29 users can ride on to connect with that Interstate:

At Henry, Illinois 29 meets the western end of Illinois 18:

In Sparland, Illinois 29 meets Illinois 17, which joins from the west:

A short while after, Illinois 17 splits from Illinois 29 to head east over the Illinois River into Lacon:

After passing through Chillicothe and Rome, Illinois 29 meets the northeastern end of Illinois 6:

As Illinois 29 gets into Peoria, a sort-of fountain interchange provides access to the US Route 150 river bridge:

After splitting into a pair of one-way streets, Illinois 29 joins Interstate 74 east, right alongside downtown Peoria:

At Interstate 74's exit numbered 95A, Illinois 29 splits off to join US Route 150, US Route 24, and Illinois 116 southwestward into East Peoria:

A short distance southwest, the four-way concurrency trades US Route 150 for Illinois 8, forming another four-way concurrency:

A very tight trumpet interchange in East Peoria sends Illinois 8 and Illinois 116 westward, while US Route 24 and Illinois 29 continue south:

By Creve Coeur, Illinois 29 meets an interchange with Interstate 474, which US Route 24 uses to join that freeway westward:

Now on its own, Illinois 29 enters North Pekin, where it meets the western end of Illinois 98:

In Pekin, Illinois 9 comes from the west and joins Illinois 29 south:

On the south side of Pekin, Illinois 9 splits from Illinois 29 to head east along the newly-constructed Pekin bypass:

After passing through Green Valley, Illinois 29 meets the western extent of Illinois 122:

Just west of San Jose, Illinois, Illinois 29 joins US Route 136 west for three miles:

Then, Illinois 29 resumes heading south by splitting from US Route 136:

Illinois 29 crosses Illinois 10 at Mason City:

Next, Illinois 123 joins from the west to follow Illinois 29 through Athens:

After passing through Athens, Illinois 123 departs to head eastward while Illinois 29 continues south:

Entering Springfield, Illinois 29 joins Illinois 4 east:

At an intersection with Business Loop 55, Illinois 4 ends, but Illinois 29 joins the business loop southward:

After a distance spanning just less than a mile, Illinois 29 splits from Business Loop 55 to head east on Sangamon Avenue, which eventually becomes the southwestern beginning of Illinois 54...

Illinois 29 turns southerly onto Dirksen Parkway and crosses Illinois 97:

Just after turning off of Dirksen Parkway to head southeast, Illinois 29 meets a cloverleaf interchange with Interstates 55 & 72:

In Taylorville, Illinois 29 meets the eastern end of Illinois 104:

As it is about to exit Taylorville, Illinois 29 passes over Illinois 48, but a signed connector road provides access:

In Pana, Illinois 29 reaches its southeastern end at the concurrency of US Route 51 and Illinois 16:
