^Looking northeastward from Colgrove Street in Kalamazoo, March 2022.
Michigan Highway 343 is Michigan's newest route designation, radiating northeastward out of Kalamazoo. As the City of Kalamazoo decided it no longer wanted the Michigan Highway 43 designation through downtown, Michigan Highway 43 was rerouted along a new detour that flanks Kalamazoo to the north. In particular, Michigan Highway 43 joins Michigan Highway 89 west to US Route 131 south, instead of running southwesterly right into downtown Kalamazoo. As such, the remainder of Michigan Highway 43 between downtown Kalamazoo and Michigan Highway 89 is still state-maintained, requiring a new designation. That designation is Michigan Highway 343, since the number "143" was taken (but 243 wasn't). The northeastern end of Michigan Highway 343 is at Michigan Highways 43 and 89 in Richland. Spurring southwesterly into Kalamazoo from there, Michigan Highway 343 reaches its southwestern end at Riverview Drive, just east of downtown, in Kalamazoo.
My photo of Michigan Highway 343 comes from a part of the highway departing a roundabout with "G" Avenue. On the northeastern outskirts of Kalamazoo, this roundabout was very recently constructed at the time of taking this shot. The eastbound reassurance marker informs motorists that they are continuing on Michigan Highway 343 toward the northeast. A trip to the Kalamazoo area in March 2022 gave me the opportunity to take this photo.
